Mid Project Evaluation

My personal investigation for Component 1 began with my aim being "to create a visual record of  different relationships around me to portray the hardships and positive moments that they endure in the style of documentary photography". My main aim was to convey in an beautiful way that nothing truly is perfect and sometimes we don't always know what is going on behind behind closed doors in peoples relationships. So far I have completed four shoots, inspired by Richard Billingham, Nick Waplington and Larry Sultan. These shoots have gone well so far and have gradually progressed and continue to do so, although my ideas have definitely changed throughout the project and will most likely continue to develop.

The first shoot was completed at a family gathering and was based on the works of Nick Waplington, I was influenced by his busy family life shots and knew I would be able to create some similar images, although there are no young children in my family. I tried to ensure all of my images were candid to re create his style of shots, creating a 'fly on the wall' illusion in my images similar to Waplington. My ideas in the editing process to create the idea that my images were shot with a film camera. I also used the idea to shoot quite close up and personal with people to make the images feel more intimate as they do in Nick Waplingtons work.

The first shoot was called 'Forest' based on the work of Ansel Adams, I tried to focus on the wider perspective of landscapes and convert some of them to black and white to recreate his style. I like how this went as I produced some good photographs and developed a style throughout. The second shoot was titled 'Plant Form' whereby I adopted the style of Imogen Cunningham and was inspired by her 'Botanic' work. I believe this went well however after the shoot I felt that there wasn't much else I could do following this theme. I wanted my work to be more creative, therefore I decided to explore people in nature for the next two shoots.

  1. please update this post as there are elements in it which do not link (last paragraph).... I think you may need to expand on your own analysis and add visual examples that link to your work or the artists you have mentioned.
